Race Car Safety Equipment Expiration Dates
Updated October 9, 2026
SFI harnesses are dated and SCCA accepts them through December 31 of the fifth year after manufacture. FIA 8855-1999 seats last 5 years, while FIA 8862-2009 and 8855-2021 seats last 10. FIA FT3 fuel cell bladders last 5 years, extendable to 7 with manufacturer recertification. Always check your own club's current rulebook, because each club sets its own limits.
Expiration at a glance
| Equipment | Standard | How long it's good for |
|---|---|---|
| Harness / belts | SFI 16.1 / 16.5 | Dated label. SCCA: through Dec 31 of the 5th year after manufacture. Some series still use 2 years. |
| Harness / belts | FIA 8853 | Expiry year printed on the FIA label |
| Seat | FIA 8855-1999 | 5 years from manufacture |
| Seat | FIA 8855-2021 | 10 years from manufacture |
| Seat | FIA 8862-2009 | 10 years from manufacture |
| Fuel cell bladder | FIA FT3-1999 | 5 years, or up to 7 with manufacturer recertification |
| Fire system | Manufacturer / SFI 17.1 | Service and refill on the maker's schedule; check the service tag |
These are the certification limits. Your club's rulebook decides what it will accept at tech, and the rules change, so confirm against the current SCCA GCR or NASA CCR before you race.
Harnesses
Every SFI or FIA harness has a label sewn into the webbing with its standard and a date. The date is what tech looks at. If the label is missing or unreadable, the belts are treated as expired.
When you're buying a car, ask for a close-up photo of each belt label. Belts are the cheapest of these items to replace, but they're the most common reason a freshly bought car fails its first tech inspection.
Seats
FIA seats carry a label with the standard and the manufacture year. An older FIA 8855-1999 seat only lasts 5 years, so a car built with one a few seasons ago may need a new seat soon. Seats certified to FIA 8862-2009 or 8855-2021 last 10 years.
Many club classes accept non-FIA seats that meet the club's own mounting rules, so a seat without an FIA label isn't automatically illegal. Check what your class requires.
Fuel cells
FIA FT3 bladders are good for 5 years from manufacture. The manufacturer can inspect and recertify a bladder for up to 2 more years, to a 7-year maximum. The dates are on a hologram sticker on the bladder, so you usually have to open the can to read it.
Club racing doesn't always require an FIA-certified cell. Check your class rules before you assume a bladder needs replacing.
What this means when you buy a car
Add up what's expired or expiring in the next season and subtract it from your offer. A car with a new seat, fresh belts and a recent bladder is worth more than an identical car that needs all three. This is one of the checks in how to buy a used race car.
Every race car listing on RaceCarStuff has fields for seat, belt and fuel cell dates. If the seller left them blank, the listing will tell you to ask.
